Hi there! How have you been during the Easter holidays?
Well if you want to know what I’ve been doing, I’ll tell you right away: I finally finished Netflix’s “13 Reasons Why”.
This new show created a lot of buzz lately, and all of the good things I’ve heard about it made me curious. I started watching and I was hooked from the very beginning. The storytelling, the mystery, the high school drama, the love story, the sensitive topics… everything was done in a captivating and meaningful way.
If you want to avoid spoilers you might want to stop here…
I mean first of all the main subject of the show is teenage suicide, and that is not an easy or captivating subject to deal with in the first place. It also deals with a lot of sensitive topics like bulling, slut shaming, sexual abuse, rape and so on. All these topics are approached in a very truthful and honest way, which is what I liked so much about the show. There was no attempt to smooth the edges or show things in a better light. It wasn’t superficial, it portrayed things exactly how they are, it was raw and dark, some scene were hard to watch (if you have seen it you know which scenes I’m referring too). Most of all, it felt real.
The funny thing about it was that the adults in the show have no clue of what was going on under their noses, much like in real life. And the interesting part was putting the pieces together about the causes of Hannah’s suicide.
High school years are hard for everyone, whether we want to admit it or not. Popular kids, normal kids everybody has his own things to deal with, and high school is the period of our life where we learn to deal with others on our own, and that is not something that comes easy. As an adult, I remember that I used to care so much about things, even the things that don’t really matter, and I remember how even the little things could become tragedies during those years. I wish kids knew that some of the things that feel like tragedy maybe wouldn’t matter in a few years time.
Anyways all the actors in the show did a terrific job into bringing this teenage drama into life, especially the young actors. The storytelling was effective and it kept me interested until the very last episode. The soundtrack was amazing by the way. I liked everything about it. Now I’m interested in reading the book.
You know this is not a show for everyone, in my opinion, first of all, you have to have a certain sensibility and a little strength I guess. But if you choose to watch it’s a very good show.
Another new series I can’t wait to see this year is Starz’s American Gods, based on the novel from my favorite author: Neil Gaiman. Finally, the waiting is almost over.
What about you guys? Have you seen “13 Reasons Why”? Did you like it? Let me know.
